Mother Louella Brown Obituary

“If I can help somebody as I travel along the way, then my living shall not be in vain.” Mother Louella Brown lived her life to the fullest, helping many with words of wisdom through spiritual guidance as well as life experiences. 

Mother Louella Brown, daughter of the late Hattie M. Johnson and Mr. Herbert Risher, Sr. was born in Smoaks, SC on June 6. 1923. She departed this life on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 in Walterboro, SC. Mother Louella was married to the late Malachi Berry on December 28, 1943. To this union, 1 child was born but died right after birth. Mother grew up in Smoaks and attended the public schools of Colleton County. She later moved to Brooklyn, New York where she resided for 47 years and worked as a laundry attendant at Laundry Dry Cleaning Workers & Allied Industry in White Plains, New York. She attended Southern Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY where she served faithfully as an Usher, Trustee, Superintendent of Sunday School and many other auxiliaries in the church. Mother Brown returned home in 1989 to take care of her ailing mother. She rejoined her home church, Bethel United Methodist where she served faithfully as an Usher and organized the Male Usher Board of Bethel. She was a devoted member and served as the Pulpit Aide for 11 years under the leadership of Rev. Joanne Walker-Brown. She loved her church and was concerned about the welfare of her church, her pastor as well as the members. She was the Mother of the church and her work, commitment and dedication spoke volumes not only in the church but the community as well. She touched the hearts of people everywhere she went. God blessed Mother Louella to live a rich and full life. She never met a stranger and was a community-minded person who did not mine working in any church and wherever she was needed. She was known as the “Community Usher" was recgonized all over the nation.

She leaves to cherish her memories; Two brothers; Mr. Charlie Risher of Patterson, NJ and Mr. Thomas (Shirley) Risher of Columbia, SC. Five sisters; Mrs. Sarah Helen Linder of Branchville, SC; Ms. Virginia Risher of Georgia, Mrs. Mamie L. Graham of Dallas, Tx; Mrs. Vymell (Larry) Corbitt of Atlanta, GA and Mrs. Bessie Jenkins of Smoaks, SC; 2 adopted daughters, Doan Mosley of Smoaks, SC and Hattie L. Chisolm of Summerville, SC; 1 adopted son, Mr. Kevin Wiggins of Walterboro, SC. ; 6 special nieces: Luella Linder and Joyce Linder of Smoaks, SC, Harriett Griggs of Bamberg, SC, Barbara Mosley, Sonya Fryar and Dianne Berry of Walterboro, SC; 2 grand nieces, Shonda Davis of Raleigh, NC and Lashawn Chisolm of Summerville, SC; A special grandnephew, Deonte (Shayla) Mosley of Walterboro, SC; a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mother Louella cherished the relationships she shared with her care providers and numerous other individuals as follows: Amy (Derek) Oliver, Betty Moore, CrayWilliams, Odessa Garrett, Elizabeth Glover, Ruby Stephens, Vivian McFadden, Harriet Nelson, Rosalee Simmons, the Linder Sisters (Ruthamae, Rebecca & Hattie Rachel), Carolyn Inabinett, Georgia Jenkins, Joyce Linder, Doris Simmons, Debra Bowers, Kathy B. Jenkins, Betty Pinckney, the Usher Board of Buckhead U.M. Church and many others.4 sisters Clara Jenkins, Vernell Brown, Delores Johnson, Luemisha Meanor, 2 brothers; Ernest Mosley Sr. and Herbert Risher, Jr. ; 4 nephews; Ernest, William, Willie and Rev. Mikel Mosley along with 1 niece; Shirley Mosley all preceded her in death.
