Mary "Skeet" Brown

Mary “Skeet” Brown age 81 passed away peacefully Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Trident Medical Center in Charleston, SC. She was born September 13, 1941 in Dorchester South Carolina to the late Walter Brown, Sr. and Lillie Mae Smalls-Brown. Skeet was educated at Colleton Training School and later attended Colleton Public Schools. 

She was preceded in death by her son John Edward Brown, brothers: Elliott Mosley, Samuel Brown, Walter Brown, Jr., and Lewis Brown; sisters: Inez Brown Washington-Colleton, Janie Mae Brown-Vandyke, Lillie Pearl Brown-Salley, Rose Mary Brown, twin sister Martha Brown-Scriven, grandson, Amaurie Salley, niece Juanita Wiggins and great nephew Preston Brown.

Skeet was a member of The United House of Prayer for All People and later fellowshipped with Rock of Ages CME Church. 

Skeet was a strong, determined and fiercely independent women. At a young age, she along with her oldest sister Inez moved to Syracuse New York where she worked for many years before returning to South Carolina. She worked various jobs throughout her life. One of her most memorable jobs was at USC Salkehatchie Walterboro Campus where she along with her brother Lewis worked until her health began to fail. 

Skeet was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She loved her son John and their valued times together. She was also a loving and caring mother to her two nephews Derrick and Eric Salley. She treasured them and embraced every moment with them. Skeet especially loved her role as Nana to their children, her precious seven grands and two great-grands. 

In her later years, she enjoyed sitting around the house with her sister Betty Ann, nieces, nephews, and friends playing her favorite card game, or “TA, TA” as she would call it. Skeet had a vivacious personality and loved to love on people. She would always say “Do what’s right and do what’s good. Be kind and help others. This world can always use one-more kind person.” Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse. Ephesians 4:32- “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” She was an inspiration to anyone that met her. Mary Skeet Brown will truly be missed by family and numerous friends.

Left to cherish her fond memories: sister, Betty Ann Brown, devoted and loving nephews Derrick and Eric Salley, of Walterboro, SC; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, care assistant nephews: Jake Washington, Alexis Brown, Darren Brown, James Scriven, Jr., Walterboro, SC; Roy Brown, Charleston, SC, and Johnny Paul of Atlanta, Georgia; niece/caregiver, Janie Ruth Brown, Tonya Brown-McMillan, and a loving and dedicated/caregiver niece, Delores Washington-Owens, of Walterboro, SC along with nieces, nephews and dear friends.
