Katie Fields Obituary

Katie Jean Powell Fields was born on September 7, 1950 to the late Norman Powell, Sr. and Mattie Mae Robinson Powell, in Cottageville, SC. She attended the public schools of Colleton County and graduated from Ruffin High School in 1968.  After graduating high school, she moved to New London, Connecticut where she would assist in the care of her younger cousins. Afterwards, she would move to Bronx, New York; later settling in Brooklyn, New York, where she would live for over 30 years.  While living in Brooklyn, Katie worked for the New York Telephone Company for over 25 years until she retired and moved back home to South Carolina.  Once returning to SC, Katie would meet Mr. Lawrence Fields.  They were married on February 14, 2002.  

 As a youth Katie accepted the Lord as her Savior and became a member of Hickory Hill Baptist Church, Cottageville, SC. Once moving to Smoaks, SC she would become a member of Lovely Hill Baptist Church where she was a member until she moved to Connecticut. Upon returning to SC after retiring, Katie would join Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.  Katie had a warm and giving heart. She never hesitated to give if she had and she treated each of her nieces and nephews as if they were her own.  

 

Left to cherish the multitude of fond memories are husband Lawrence Fields of the home; step daughter Shalamar Brisbane, North Charleston, SC; three step grandchildren, Damire Fields, ShaMyla Quarles, and Zionnna Fields, all of North Charleston, SC);  two sisters, Roxie Callegari, (Los Angeles, CA) and Shirley Rivers, (Walterboro, SC); one brother, James Powell (Carolyn), (Gaston, SC); two sisters-in-law, Florence Simmons and Catherine Simmons(Harry), both of Greenpond, SC; Five brothers-in-law, Larry Simmons (Bradenton, Fl), Anthony Washington, Calvin Simmons (Sharon), both of Greenpond, SC, Johnny Simmons (Gladys), Gary Simmons (Charlene), both of Walterboro, SC; one aunt; Dr. Ruth Robinson Martin, Hartford, Connecticut; fourteen nieces, nine nephews, 40 great nieces and nephews; two goddaughters, and a host of cousins and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by siblings, Norman Powell, Jr., Jacquelyn Powell, and Jack Powell; and stepdaughter, Shekira Fields.
