If there's one word to describe Joseph to his family, it would be devoted; to his friends, compassionate; to his community, a pillar; and to the nation, a leader with a commanding presence. He embodied all these qualities and more until God called him back home on Monday, July 29th, 2024. Even though it felt too soon, we believe he was needed for a higher purpose.
The role of a leader was bestowed to Joseph on November 4th, 1953 as the eldest son of Anna S. Wigfall and Joseph Wigfall, Sr. From the earliest age, Joseph displayed exceptional leadership qualities commanding the band as the first drum major at Cross High School in Cross, SC. With his towering height, he would bend his body backward parallel to the ground, low enough where his hat would touch the field, and, with a domineering strut guide the band through the show. He would later go on to attend Voorhees University in Denmark, SC, earning a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. In 1985, Joseph answered the call to join the United States Army, proudly serving his country for 22 years and over 15 years as a civilian servant.
He is preceded in death by his mother Anna, father Joseph Sr., brother James, sister Scherlin, nephew Na’Shon, and godmother Leola Spencer. Joseph leaves behind an everlasting legacy with his wife Deborah Wigfall; children Jona Wigfall, Kelvin (Neshia) Wright and Makala Wright Browning; godmother Racheal Brown; siblings Yvonne, Sonia, Bobby, Evet, Nellie Haskell, and Dorothy Britton; and with a host of nieces and nephews including his grandchildren Abigail, Ayden, Nicholasand Tyler.
So, let's celebrate the incredible life of Joseph Wigfall Jr. by focusing on how he lived, not on how he died. Let's measure his worth not by what he gained, but by what he gave. The true measure of a man lies in his character and actions, not his background. It's not about his church or creed, nor about the words in his eulogy, but about how many people mourned his passing.
