Harold Windham Obituary

The late Mr. Harold Elias Windham was born March 5, 1939 in Charleston. SC. His early years were spent in the family homestead on Charleston’s East Side at 125 America Street. He attended Immaculate Conception School, Charleston, SC until the family returned to Round-O, SC.  At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Galilee Baptist Church.  He lived up to the expectations of his parents by helping attend to the family farm.

Affectionately known as "Tony", he attended  Colleton County High School  and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the oldest HBCU in the US. He married his loving wife, Edith Manigo  March 1965.

Harold’s career was spent serving in the United States Air Force and in the transportation and supply chain industry including working at Greyhound, Meals on Wheels and United Planning Organization in Washington, DC.  After retirement, he frequently traveled to visit family from his favorite cousins in New York and Ohio, his brothers and sister in Virginia, and his son in Tampa, Florida.

We remember him for his wit, charm and infectious laughter. His favorite pastimes  include his infamous love of travel, driving  up and down I-95 from NY to SC, enjoying good food, good company and afternoons watching old time Westerns. Harold was a down-to-earth man of compassion, generosity, kindness and passion, all dispensed with an occasional and unexpected dose of humor.

He returned to South Carolina enjoying the home of his youth, the loving company of his devoted daughter Carolyn and extended family until his peaceful transition on July 22, 2020.

Harold was predeceased by his parents, James and Rosa Lee Magwood-Hiott; son; Neville Windham, Sr. ; daughters; Shirley Smalls and Carolyn Burnett Cooper;  brothers; Clyde Hiott, Bruce Hiott, Walter Wyndham and Robert Wyndham; sisters; Lether H. Brown, Dorothy H. Kennedy and Lory H. Adams.

Harold leaves to cherish his loving wife; Mrs. Edith M. Windham of Oxon Hill, Maryland, son; Harold Shelton of Florida; sister; Pat Hiott of Chesapeake, VA,  son-in-law; Michael Cooper of Columbia, SC, grandchildren; Brandon Manigo of Maryland, Ashleigh and Travis Cooper of Columbia, SC, Neville Windham, Jr. and Willie Green of Washington, DC, Tony Shelton of Florida and several great-grandchildren; special nieces; Tami W.
