Elbert Winfield Obituary

Mr. Elbert Odell Winfield was born July 17, 1945 to Mr. Elbert Douglas Winfield and Charlie Mae Dukes at the Walterboro Air Force Base. He received his education at the Public School of Colleton County. He was a graduate of the Class of 1964 Colleton County High School Wolverines. Mr. Elbert Winfield moved to Delaware and later relocated to the Big City of New York where he worked as a furniture finisher and filing files at the Social Security Administration. 

Mr. Winfield was drafted into the United States Army where he served as Sergeant in the Vietnam Airborne 9th Infantry and would lead his crew through the jungle having Boo Boo traps. He was the best. On July 8th his Crew was attacked and Mr. Winfield was hit. God healed his body and upon healing he went back to serve a second tour to keep his brother Mr. Frederick Blue from being drafted. 

Mr. Winfield was assigned back to his duties and was attacked again on December 1970 where one of the crew members Leblanc from Boston was hit and Mr. Winfield held LeBlanc while he transitioned. He made LeBlanc a promise ; If I ever have another son, I will name him LeBlanc and on May 31, 1973 he was blessed with LeBlanc. He recovered and came back into the work field. He worked at Coastal Fruit as a truck driver, Walterboro Ford as a mechanic, and several Cement Companies. On September 9, 1996, Mr. Winfield retired from Canady Power Plant.

He joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he sang in the Choir. He later moved his membership to Greater Calvary AME Church in Jacksonboro. He also sang with the Jacksonboro Male Chorus. He later to New Life UME where he served on the New Methodist Men Choir, where he served faithfully until his health failed.

On July 16, 1994 he was joined in holy matrimony to Mrs. Rhonda Marie Brown. 

Preceding him in death were his father, Elbert Douglas Winfield, Charlie Mae BArlow, Brother James Dukes (Sonny Boy), Brother Fredrick Blue, Brother Herbert Dukes stepson Kendrell Jerome Brown. 

Left to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Rhonda Marie Winfield and dedicated children: Karen Winfield and Keith Winfield both of New York, LeBlanc Winfield (Sabrina) and Leslie McQune, one adopted son Craig "Sauce Man" Brown, three loving children he raised as his own, Yasmin McCamick (Rodney), Kareen Burnell and Jarod Brown.

Rev. Larry Winfield (Sandra) of Walterboro, SC, Shirley Jones of Florida, Carolym Winfield Fleming of Wilmington, Delaware and Wanda Johnson of Summerville, SC.

Sister and Brothers in Laws:

Debra Burnell, Darlene Burnell, Monisha Mungin, Jerome Burnell (Carolyn) Clarence Washington (Dorothy), Linda Campbell, Rufus and Loretta Lloyd of Virginia, Rev. Donald and Joyce Goodwin, Beaufort, SC, Cardell Green of Hilton Head, SC Leroy Small and Elizabeth Sawyer. 

Grandchildren:

Al was known for giving the grandbabies their nicknames. LeBlanc Winfield, II, Jamaal, Bug Tustle, Sapphire- Fe-Fee; his girls, Lauren & London, Laila, his princess and Aniyah Yak Yak, 25 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Friends

Two dedicated young men he can call on Kenneth and Ken'jhad Pusha, Deacon Ricky Green (Lynette) always having his hot mean on time, his favorite, cabbage. Dedicated friends, Ivory Brothers, Buck Dennis Mitchell and Glenn Grant (Pat).


He coached Al’s Angels and Al's World Softball Team. and was a member of the Marksmen Hunting Club, the Postal Express Fishing Club and a member of the Douglas Lodge #277

Education 

Denmark Technical College where he received an Associate Degree in Carpentry & Electricity September 21.

Medals:

He received the National Defense Medal, Silver Star, two Overseas Service Bars, Army Commendation Medal Device, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart Expert Rifle Sharpshooter.
