Darryl Marquet Benson was born on October 5, 1963, Brooklyn, New York to the late Robert Griffth Benson and Alma L Benson. He departed this life on September 28, 2025, in Brooklyn, New York. At an early age he attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. He continued to be faithful throughout his life.
Darryl attended Erasmus Hall High School Academy of the Arts, Brooklyn, New York. He also attended the School of Martial Arts under the Leadership of Professor David James -Vee Arnis Ju Jitsu - School of Self-defense, Brooklyn, New York. He was employed with the City of New York - Rikers Island Prison for (20) years as a Correction Officer. He was also employed for eleven (11) years with the Housing Authority of New York City. He enjoyed working as an officer until he retired on September 1, 2016.
​Darryl had a love for music, not just any type of music, he was a bass player with a love for jazz and funk disco boogie. His collection of music and artist included: George Benson, “ Give Me The Night”, Anthony Hamilton, Bob Marley, Lenny Williams, “ Cause I Love You, Bootsy Rubber Band, “ I’d Rather Be With You”, Rufus with Chaka Khan, “Tell Me Something Good and the list goes on.
Darryl's love for music led him to be an accomplished Base Player - playing on a professional album “In My Dreams” by Chart Topping Recording Artist “Will Downing on Island Records in 1988”.
Darryl was highlighted in the Essence Magazine, September 2004, as a Wealth Builder and known as the King of His Castle in the Hood. Audrey Edwards, Senior Essence writer stated, that he was able to purchase Black Bedford Stuyvesant, it was a majestic brick and lime stone Italianate four-story, four-bedroom, two-family town house, gleaming like a polished jewel on a block of stately brownstones in Brooklyn, New York. Darryl quoted, “I never thought I could get a property like that - I figured it would go to a sister in the choir” Darryl, 40, at the time a correctional officer at Rikers Island Prison.
Darryl was the president of the Neighborhood Block Association in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York.
Darryl enjoyed riding his Harley Davis, as a member of the Imperia Bikers Association.
He often travels to the Carolinas during his leisure time. His love and respect for his mom werevisible in everything he did.
Darryl would never come home unannounced, because he knew he would be coming to enjoy his mother's southern style home cooking (no special dish, but everything she prepared). He enjoyed lots of fun, jokes, and laughter with his family.
Darryl loved traveling abroad to Johannesburg, Ethiopia, Africa and the Philippines where he purchased a vacation home. After returning on several occasions Darryl took the opportunity to send care boxes & supplies back to those countries he often visited. He truly lived an adventurous, exciting life, and enjoyed doing the things he loved to the fullest.
He leave to cherish more than ever his loving mother, Alma Benson of Walterboro, SC, one brother Robert Keith Benson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one aunt Bessie Jamison of Brooklyn, New York, a special cousin he cherished as a brother Greogry Brown of Walterboro, SC, Brenda Brown, Brooklyn, New York a special cousin he cherished as a sister, Reva Jamison of Woodstock, New Jersey, Kelvin (Yvette) Jamison of Ecuador, Sam(Coretha) Magwood of Charleston SC, a special friend (Robyn) of Brooklyn, New York and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends who loved him dearly and will miss him very much.
