Alphonza Smalls Obituary

Alphonza Smalls was born on June 16, 1948, in Walterboro, SC, to George Eddie Smalls and Nancy Shider Smalls.

He was educated in Colleton County Public Schools, graduating from Ruffin High School in 1967. At an early age he joined Springtown United Methodist Church.  He worked at Aston Hill Manufacturing in Walterboro.

He met and married the love of his life Delphine Clayton in 1968.  To that union was born two dedicated daughters, twins Evonne and Evette and a beloved son Jermaine.

Alphonza, affectionately known as Bugga was known for his stubbornness, if he wanted to do something, you could not convince him otherwise, he is going to do what he wanted to do. But he would give the shirt off his back if he had it to give.

One of his favorite things to do was spending time with his grand children.  He was very proud of them.  He was loyal to his friends and family, he was always there when someone needed him.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor; he could put a smile on anyone’s face.  He also loved his car; he did not want to be constrained. He was always going somewhere or the other.

Alphonza was preceded in death by his parents, George Eddie Smalls and Nancy Shider Smalls; wife, DelphineClayton Smalls; brother Alfred Smalls, sisters Sarah Smalls, Judy Bennet, Cloie Dunham, of St Petersburg, Florida.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his daughter Evonne S. Thompson of Hampton, Virginia; daughter, Evette Smalls-Cooper (William) of Hampton, Virginia; son, Jermaine Smalls (Shandel) of Walterboro; extra daughter, Veronica Swinson (Lenny) of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Eula Harris and Annette Aikens of New York, Joann Drain (William) of Smoaks, South Carolina; and two brothers Willie Hodges of Walterboro, South Carolina and Russell Kenneth Smalls Sr. (Mary) of St Petersburg, Florida.

Sister-in-laws: Janie Daniels of Walterboro, brother in laws: William Clayton of Fayetteville, NC; 11 grandchildren: Wesley, Kiara, Malik, X-Zavier, Elijah, Latrelle, Cory, Jalliyah, Jaden, Kayla, and Kadence

10 great-grandchildren: Skye, Rayne, Averyana, Kehlani, JJ, Skylar, Aaliyah, Eden, Carson, and Leanna and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
